UFC President Announces Upcoming MMA Event Slated For May 23rd in Las Vegas

The UFC president strongly believes that the return of the UFC is not in any way reckless, because the championship had a plan for the re-launch that considered current world events, and they’ve been following through on these plans at their events. He said: “Listen, there’s no guarantee. There’s nowhere I can say it’s 100%. Nothing is 100%, especially when you’re dealing with, like, a virus. Staying home every day isn’t gonna guarantee anything, either.”

UFC Las Vegas May 23 moved to 30 May – “if not in Las Vegas, it will be held elsewhere” DW

A recent Sports Illustrated interview with Dana White, President of the UFC, has given a glimpse into the future of the sport. The UFC has just returned to our screens, the first sport to do so after a close-to-two-months break due to measures taken to curb the spread of the coronavirus.

The sport had its first post-coronavirus-lockdown event on the 9th of May. The event, tagged UFC 249, was held at Jacksonville’s VyStar Veterans Memorial Arena. Two more events are scheduled to take place on May 13 and May 16, 2020, in Florida City. Then there is the big upcoming event which is expected to take place on May 30 in Las Vegas with the venue of the event yet to be confirmed, but Dana White commented yesterday that “It’s definitely not May 23. We’re hoping it’s May 30. If it isn’t (in Las Vegas), it’ll be May 30 somewhere else,”.

The UFC president remarked that these four events signify a return to the UFC’s orderly schedule. He further stated that the partners were quite cooperative at the opening event in Jacksonville, Florida, as they were able to conduct the event in a way that was proper and safe. According to White: “You just can’t hide forever. Who gets to determine how long we go without sports? It’s a really weird situation, in a weird time.”

UFC Return Not Reckless

White noted that appropriate safety measures have been put in place for the championship’s return. This way, the safety of employees, fighters, and fans can be guaranteed. He affirmed that it is not out of the ordinary for the UFC to make these types of safety and precautionary arrangements.

Latest on UFC Fight Island

In the interview with Sports Illustrated, Dana White again discussed Fight Island. In a reaction to the numerous stories surrounding the subject, White tried to clarify some of the misinformation out there. Fight Island is billed to be a UFC-only training facility. And even though he didn’t reveal the location of this sports complex, White stated that works are currently ongoing on the infrastructure.

According to him, UFC Fight Island is going to be a lot more technologically advanced than anything we’ve seen in any video game. And it is going to be used frequently until the world is free of the COVID-19 pandemic. White noted that one added advantage of the Fight Island is the ease of access for people who wouldn’t need a visa to fly into the Island.
