After this weekend’s triumph, we are looking to add another winner to the tally. A Wednesday night in Italy sounds like a great place to do it. The Champions League knockouts are here and there are plenty of big games on offer. Our pick is Inter Milan vs Liverpool. Our tie might not be as glamorous as Paris Saint-Germain vs Real Madrid, but we believe it has a better chance of a winning bet. It may not have the glamour, but it has the prestige. Inter and Liverpool both sit second in their domestic league and will be looking to Europe to make a statement this season. The match is finely poised and there will be plenty of action to follow come tomorrow night. The Giuseppe Meazza is a fitting venue for this monumental occasion, and I fully expect the I Nerazzurri to be in full voice come kick-off.
Liverpool and the Champions League go hand in hand, after their recent triumph in 2019, they will be looking to get back to the pinnacle of European football. An impressive group stage saw Liverpool go 6 for 6, a run that saw them win every game of the group stage while scoring 17 goals in the process. They even had the pleasure of beating Inters fierce rivals AC Milan home and away. A trip to Italy will seem far less daunting now. However, the Inter Milan faithful won’t see it like that, and I fully expect them to make the evening as hostile as possible.
Jurgen Klopp’s Reds go into this game with a full squad and are in fine form. This weekend they dug out and 1-0 win over a dogged Burnley side, with a scrappy goal coming from Fabinho to steal all three points. Predicting a starting XI may be tricky as Klopp for the first time in a while has plenty of quality at his disposal but one thing is for sure top goal scorer Mohammed Salah will be one of the first names on the team sheet. He’ll be someone to keep an eye on, especially in front of goal. The Egyptian will be looking to add to his already impressive seven goals in the Champions League this season.
Inter Milan have had quite the facelift over the past three years they have gone from a side with little direction and an ageing squad, and now have re-emerged an Italian powerhouse once again. The black and blues have ex-manager Antonio Conte to thank, after finally lifting the Scudetto for the first time since 2010 things were looking promising. However, after a turbulent summer for the club, Conte resigned.
Many believed his departure this summer would cause all that progress to unravel this season, especially with the sales of star striker Romelu Lukaku and up-and-coming wingback Ashraf Hakimi.
Surprisingly Inter has remained strong, the additions of Eden Dzeko and Denzel Dumfries has helped fill the void left by Lukaku and Hakimi. And new coach Simone Inzaghi has picked up where Conte left off without much of a hitch. Inter currently sit second in the league one point behind rivals AC Milan despite having a game in hand and look strong favourites to retain the coveted Scudetto once again.

Here is the betslip on Ladbrokes for today’s game:
- Double Chance Liverpool OR Draw
Inter have looked strong domestically over the past few seasons, however, have been shaky in Europe. This is the first time in four years they have managed to get past the group stage and the last time they progressed past the Round of 16 was the 2010/11 season. Liverpool on the other hand have had strong success in recent years reaching two finals in the last four campaigns. With Liverpool looking stronger than ever, I believe their European experience will help them win or at least leave the Giuseppe Meazza with a draw.
- Under 3.5 Match Goals
- Salah Over 2 Shots On Target
- Dzeko Over 1 Shot On Target
Salah’s record in the Champions League has been nothing short of prolific, he has already achieved 7 goals this campaign and has the capacity to exploit Inters back three. Salah has achieved minimum 2 Shots on Target in every Champions League fixture; I’m hoping the streak will continue. Dzeko’s stats also point to a SOT, he only blanked once in the group stage and has averaged 3 shots on target at home in the UCL.
Match goals can be tricky to predict, however this fixture is only the first leg. So, both teams will be wary of going gun-ho too early and risking elimination at the first hurdle, keeping the game close and competitive would seem like the right approach from both teams therefore limiting the goals on the night.
